Nearly One in Four People In The U.S Have Cut Back On Eating Meat

These data are from a Sept. 16-30 Gallup telephone poll with U.S. adults.

Asked how often they eat meat -- such as beef, chicken or pork -- two in three U.S. adults say they eat it "frequently" (67%) while 23% say they eat meat "occasionally" and 7% "rarely" eat it. Just a 3% report "never" eating meat.

Certain groups are more likely than others to say they have eaten less meat in the past year:

- Women are about twice as likely as men to report having cut down on meat consumption.

- Nonwhites report having reduced meat in their diets at a higher rate than whites.

- Midwesterners are less likely to be reducing their meat consumption than adults in other parts of the country.

- About one in four residents of cities and suburbs have reduced their meat consumption, while residents in rural areas are less likely to report having done so.

Data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture found that pork and especially beef were the most popular meats for most of the 1900s, but chicken sharply gained in popularity over time, eventually becoming the top consumed meat in recent years. From a global perspective, the U.S. regularly ranks among the top countries for meat consumption.

Would it surprise you to learn that 95% of the people who bought a plant-based burger this past year were meat-eaters?

“Most surveys definitely show that anywhere between 30 and 50% [of people] are interested in cutting down on meat,” Becky Ramsing of the Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future told HuffPost. The institution’s current research is focused on “getting our brains around” why a growing number of people are reducing their meat consumption without becoming vegetarian or vegan.

I'm not sure if I can go full vegetarian, however, I think that most people should consider eating a little healthier.

Do you plan on cutting meat?
