Do Nootropics Really Work?

What are Nootropics?
Nootropics are any type of supplement that claims to improve brain function. AKA "smart drugs" or "study drugs".

Drugs like cocaine, Adderall, Modafinil and caffeine can have short term improvements - but in the long-term, their benefits wear off and cause dependencies.
However, there are some supplements that are being used to improve brain functioning, boost productivity, and focus for many people.
Does It Really Work Though?
Some small studies show that some nootropic supplements can affect the brain. But there is a lack of evidence from large, controlled studies to show that some of these supplements consistently work and are completely safe.
Because of the lack of research, experts cannot say with certainty that over-the-counter nootropics improve thinking or brain function — or that everyone can safely use them.
For example, one report on cognitive enhancers found that there is not enough evidence to indicate that they are safe and effective for healthy people. The researchers also point to ethical concerns.
However, there is evidence that omega-3 fatty acids can benefit the brain and overall health. In addition, caffeine can improve mental focus in the short term.
Barry Gordon, MD, PhD, director of the cognitive neurology/neuropsychology division at Johns Hopkins Medicine, says there's "no strong evidence" that any of the supplements now being sold for their supposed memory-boosting powers are helpful. "It's not clear that they work and not clear that they're safe," he says. He’s also skeptical of the basic premise behind nootropics.
"The circuits that are involved in human cognition are very complicated and not fully understood," he says. "You can't just 'turn up the dial' that easily." He notes that people who believe their mental performance has increased thanks to nootropics are largely being influenced by a placebo effect. "If you're more confident and think you'll do better, you will do better."
"Nootropics and adaptogens don't really work unless you have excellent health. You shouldn't be drinking and smoking regularly, be around extremely toxic people or be sleep deprived. You have to do a lot of cardio, read, meditate, sleep, eat a very healthy diet, do intermittent fasting, and practice a lot of self-affirmation and other activities that boost your purpose and self-esteem. Without these nootropics and adaptogens can't facilitate that much." (Reddit User)
